I am an award-winning professor, facilitator, and social justice advocate committed to uncovering the often-erased truths of Black history, colonialism, slavery, and systemic racism. My work helps people understand how historical policies shape today’s injustices and why these histories have been intentionally hidden to uphold inequality.
Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, in a community shaped by redlining, segregation, and white flight, I never fully understood why inequality between neighborhoods was so stark. It wasn’t until college that I learned about the history of redlining, exclusionary policies, and the deliberate denial of wealth-building opportunities to Black communities. That discovery changed everything. It became my life’s mission to teach the history we were never meant to know.
Much of my work focuses on historical amnesia, the widespread erasure of history that sustains systems of power and oppression. I help students, educators, and organizations understand how the legacies of slavery and colonialism continue to shape our society. To me, history isn’t just about the past; it’s a pathway to justice. My current research highlights racial gaslighting and other rhetorical abuse tactics used to undo diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
How did racism become embedded in our systems and institutions? This workshop traces the historical roots of systemic racism in the U.S., focusing on slavery, colonialism, and policy decisions that shaped racial inequality. Participants will also explore different levels of racism—individual, internalized, institutional, and systemic—and leave with a deeper understanding of how history informs the present.
This workshop explores the concept of racial gaslighting—manipulative tactics used by individuals, institutions, and systems to deny, distort, or minimize the experiences of Black people and people of color in order to uphold systemic racism. Participants will examine historical and contemporary examples of racial gaslighting and learn to recognize it in everyday interactions, media, and institutional policies. By the end of the session, attendees will leave empowered with strategies to challenge and resist these destructive tactics.
